How large is the liver?

The liver is the second largest organ in the body (the skin is the largest). It weighs 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms) in adults, representing about 2.5 percent of the total body weight. In children, the liver accounts for 4 percent of total body weight. The characteristic pudgy abdomen of infants is a result of the size of the liver.
