What are some developmental changes that occur during the neonatal period?

The greatest change from birth to the neonatal period is that the neonate must begin to perform many functions that had previously been done by the mother, especially respiration, digestion, and excretion. With the first breath of air following delivery, the lungs fill with air and the neonate begins to breathe for himself.
