Upper Gastrointestinal Tract

What functions are performed by the stomach?

The stomach serves several important functions in the digestion of food. It stores ingested food; it is the site of mechanical and enzymatic digestion of ingested food; and it produces and secretes intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor is a compound secreted by cells of the stomach that facilitates the absorption of vitamin B12 in the small intestine.
