What are near-Earth objects and are they dangerous?

There are more than ten thousand known NEOs—near-Earth objects—that are asteroids with orbits that cross Earth’s orbit. An NEO could strike our planet, possibly unleashing cosmic destruction; indeed, astronomers have already classified more than one thousand NEOs as potentially hazardous asteroids.
