Although there are no major research telescopes located in the British Isles, there has been a rich history of astronomical research centered in Britain for centuries. The Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, for example, is still a major radio astronomy research center in Manchester. The Royal Observatory in Greenwich is no longer an astronomical research facility, but it is still significant as the origin for the Prime Meridian and the longitude system that maps Earth’s surface and the celestial sphere.
