With its suite of scientific instruments, which includes cameras, spectrometers, and a magnetometer, Venus Express has studied the atmosphere, electromagnetic characteristics, and surface of Venus in great detail. It has made important strides toward understanding the origin of the runaway greenhouse effect on Venus, studied the Venusian surface and atmosphere using infrared light, and may have confirmed the occurrence of lightning on the planet.
