Old Testament

The Pentateuch

Did the Israelites meet any other people on their journey?

Yes. The first people they met were the warmongering Amalekites. The Israelites fought the Amalekites and won, but it was not easy. As the fighting went on, whenever Moses held up his hand, the Israelites prevailed. When Moses lowered his hand, the Amalekites prevailed. Moses got tired of holding up his hand but could not stop lest the Israelites lose. So Aaron, helpful brother as always, gave Moses a rock to sit on and he and Hur held Moses’ hands up.

Evidently, at some earlier, unspecified point in the Moses narrative, Moses’ wife Zipporah and their two sons were sent back to Midian to live again, because the next people the Israelites meet are those very people, newly arrived from Midian.
