Because the wise men are described as having brought three types of gifts to Jesus, posterity has it that there were three wise men, one for each gift offered. However, the account in Matthew reads simply, “Then Herod sent a private message to the wise men, asking them to come see him.” (NLT, Matthew 2:7) There could have been any number of them.
