By the eighteenth century, hieroglyphs had been undecipherable for centuries. By using what they knew of Greek, scholars were able to decipher the meaning of hieroglyphs. This was the key needed to unlock the plethora of pictographs inscribed on untold numbers of Egyptian treasures, including the Merneptah Stele.
