If God is supremely good, how did an evil spirit come from him?

Scholars continue to debate this. One possibility has to do with shades of meaning. In English, the word “evil” means spiritual wickedness. In Hebrew, “evil” carries with it connotations of dysfunction and suffering, not only in a person but in the physical world as well. So in Saul’s case, the evil spirit might refer to, say, mental illness. Many scholars think Saul suffered from clinical depression.
