Old Testament

The Pentateuch

Now that the tablets of the Covenant were broken, how did Moses communicate God’s law to the Israelites?

At God’s direction, Moses went back up on Mount Sinai. God instructed Moses, “‘Write these words; in accordance with these words, I have made a covenant with you and Israel.’ He was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.” (NRSV, Exodus 34:27–28) The covenant between God and the Israelites was reestablished.

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai this time, his face shone because he had talked with God. This foreshadowed the Transfiguration of Jesus many years later.
