The Gadites and Reubenites (descendants of Jacob’s sons, Gad and Reuben) had a lot of cattle. Respectfully, they asked Moses and the other leaders if they could claim their portion of land right where they were because it was good land for cattle. At first, Moses was angry because he thought all of the tribes should go into Canaan together. However, the Gadites and Reubenites promised to not claim their portion of land until they had gone with the rest of the Israelites to claim theirs, and would fight with them if need be. Moses was fine with this plan.
