The people of Judah had come back to Jerusalem recently, and gathered the sacred vessels to put in the temple. Now the people were afraid Holofernes would destroy them. So the people of Judah sent word to the neighboring towns, and instructed them to stand guard on the mountaintops. In addition, the people stored up food and other supplies just in case there was a long siege. Also, the people fasted and prayed to God.
