The Bible and Pop Culture

What is pop culture?

Pop culture, or popular culture, is the collection of attitudes, tastes, and images that reflect mainstream interests in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, particularly in the Western hemisphere. Television, movies, music, books, and other media are influenced by this collection of ideas.

The Bible has a broad and varied history of influencing church doctrine and the morality of those who believe in the book’s sacredness. The Bible’s influence is so pervasive, however, that much of its content is entrenched in secular consciousness. Events, images, and people in the Bible pop up in all kinds of secular venues. Because the Bible’s influence in secular society is so widespread, it would be impossible to describe them all here. Still, some biblically influenced pieces of pop culture panorama bear mention because of the enormity of their popularity or influence inside and outside religious circles.
