More About the Bible

The Bible and Pop Culture

When was the Hollywood heyday for mainstream movies based on events in the Bible?

In the mid-twentieth century, movies based on biblical events were big business. Their appeal extended beyond religious circles. Big-name stars and lavish sets were the norm. Generally, these movies went more for dramatic effect than for strict adherence to the Bible. Costumes, for instance, looked vaguely biblical, but were couched firmly in 1950s fashion, including conical bras, sassy ponytails, and matte red lipstick for the women, and slick, pomaded hair and clean-shaven faces for the men.
