What is the cultural significance of the rainbow?

Rainbows have meant different things to different cultures throughout the ages. For instance, Norse mythology holds that the rainbow was thought to be a bridge between the home of the gods, Asgard, and earth, Midgard. Only gods and deceased human heroes were allowed to cross the bridge.
