Old Testament

The Pentateuch

What kind of fruit did Eve give Adam?

An apple, right? Actually, no. Oftentimes the fruit is depicted as an apple in art. The Bible, however, does not specify what kind of fruit it is. Eve explained to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.’” (NRSV, Genesis 3:2–3) The fruit might be an apricot, pomegranate, or fig. Or it might be a fruit that people of today have never had, a fruit that is now extinct.
