Who betrayed Jesus by denying knowing who he was?

Peter did. Earlier in the evening, Peter promised Jesus, “Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.” Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” (NRSV, Matthew 26:34, 35)
