Gospels and Acts of the Apostles

Who was crucified alongside Jesus?

Two criminals. It is in Luke 23 that more is revealed about the crucifixion of the criminals. One criminal mocked Jesus. The other criminal said to the mocker, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then to Jesus the man said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (NRSV, Luke 23:40–43) It was a criminal, then, who was the first to understand—not Jesus’ apostles—that Jesus’ kingdom was in heaven, not on earth.
