Gospels and Acts of the Apostles

Who was the woman caught in adultery?

The Bible does not name her. The scribes and Pharisees took her to the temple where Jesus was teaching. They said, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” Jesus knew the scribes and Pharisees were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him. Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground. Then he straightened up and said, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again, Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground. One by one the elders went away because they knew in their hearts that they were sinful, too. Jesus stood up and said to the woman, “Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.” (NRSV, John 8:4,7,11)
