From Antietam to Chancellorsville: September 1862 to May 1863Battles For the West |
Did Rosecrans pursue? |
No. Both sides had been badly mauled. Total casualties came to about ten thousand on each side, for a total of twenty thousand in all. Rosecrans waited and allowed his men to rest, while Bragg and his men fled all the way to Chattanooga. The first significant battle of 1863 was a tense one and could have gone either way, but General Thomas’ holding the center had proven vital.
