Why did Bragg fail to press his advantage?

For once the answer is swift and short. Bragg was a notorious pessimist, always given to thinking that the worst would happen. He could not believe his own good luck on the morning of December 31, 1862, and by late afternoon too much time had passed. The battle was renewed on January 2, 1863, but Bragg soon commenced a retreat, giving up all the ground he had previously gained in Tennessee.
