In Europe in the Middle Ages, most individuals’ knowledge of the world was quite limited. Geographic knowledge developed by the Greeks and Romans (who knew the Earth was a sphere) was all but lost in Europe. Europeans of the time thought of the world as flat and composed of only Europe, Asia, and Africa.
