What are some of the most important rules regarding obtaining distributions from my 401(k) plan?

According to the IRS, you generally cannot take distributions from your 401(k) plan unless one of the following events occurs: the death of the plan participant; termination of the plan without establishment of a successor plan; reaching age 59½; or incurring some sort of financial hardship.
