Surviving Financial Crises

Wills and Trusts

What should I do about my deceased spouse’s debts?

If the debts are joint, the surviving spouse must continue to pay for them. But if the debts are small individual debts, sometimes the creditors may forgive them. In general, the estate is responsible for those debts, and the names of all debts/creditors should be reported to the probate court. Contact all credit card companies and let them know of the death. Cancel all cards unless you’re named on the account and wish to retain the card.
