Yes, Rutherford and Lucy Hayes had eight children: Sardis Birchard, James Webb, Rutherford Platt, Frances, Scott Russell, Joseph, George Crook, and Manning Force. Sardis followed in his father’s footsteps by attending Harvard law school and became a successful real estate lawyer. James served as his father’s secretary during the White House years and later founded a successful business. He also distinguished himself in military action, winning a Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery during the Spanish–American War. Rutherford Platt graduated from Cornell, and then worked as a successful banker in Asheville, North Carolina. Frances settled in Frémont, Ohio, and married. Scott Russell became a successful railroad executive. The other three children—Joseph, George Crook, and Manning—all died as infants.
