Early Career

What did Hayes do after earning his undergraduate degree?

Though he was learning law at the law firm in Columbus, his uncle Sardis wanted young Rutherford to have a formal legal education at an institution of higher learning. Hayes entered Harvard Law School and remained there until 1845. During his time at Harvard, he met former President John Quincy Adams, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and famed lawyer and politician Daniel Webster.
