How did Grant return to the military?

Grant joined the army with a group of volunteers in Galena, Illinois. As a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran, he became the natural leader of the volunteers. He became colonel of a local regiment and faced off against Confederate troops at Belmont, Missouri. He later became commander of the southeast Missouri district.
