Ulysses S. Grant

Military Career

What were Grant’s initial victories that brought him acclaim?

Grant secured victories in Tennessee, capturing Fort Henry on the Cumberland River and then Fort Donelson near the Tennessee River. His win at Fort Donelson in 1862 constituted the first major Union victory of the war. He earned the nickname “Unconditional Surrender” Grant for telling one of his subordinates: “No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted.”
