William Henry Haywood Jr., John Y. Mason, George Dromgoole, and William Dunn Moseley all went to college with Polk and had political careers. Haywood served as a U.S. senator for North Carolina. Mason served as the U.S. secretary of the navy for both President John Tyler and Polk and also served as Polk’s attorney general. Drom-goole served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Virginia.
