James K. Polk

Early Career

What did Polk do after graduating college?

Polk studied law under well-known lawyer Felix Grundy, who previously had served in the Kentucky legislature and on the Kentucky Supreme Court. Grundy was a friend of Andrew Jackson and later became a U.S. senator from Tennessee and U.S. attorney general under President Martin Van Buren.

Polk studied under Grundy for two years and was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in June 1820.
