Early Career

What did Harrison do in the military?

After meeting with Indiana governor Oliver Morton about helping with the war recruitment effort, Harrison decided to join the war effort more directly. Morton commissioned him a second lieutenant in the 70th Indiana Regiment. He rose to become brigadier general and distinguished himself well in battle. He served under Major General Joseph Hooker and saw significant combat action, including the Battle of Resaca and the Battle of Peachtree Creek, both in Georgia.
