Jacob Johnson worked as a host at a local inn named Casso’s, but died when Andrew was only three years old. He passed away a month after carrying out a heroic rescue. He fell ill from complications after diving into an ice cold pond to save two men, including the editor of the Raleigh Star. Andrew Johnson’s mother, Mary, worked as a spinner and a weaver to support her family.
