What work did Johnson have to do as a boy?

Johnson worked as an apprentice to a tailor when he was a young boy. Because he had to work to help his family survive, Johnson had no formal education. He worked for many years for James J. Selby of Raleigh, who taught Johnson and his brother the tailoring trade.
