What economic phenomenon plagued Carter’s years in the White House?

Inflation peaked during the Carter years, creating an unstable economic environment. Carter had been a harsh critic of Ford’s economic policies, but the economy worsened during his residency. Both inflation and unemployment rose in Carter’s tenure, because the lessening value of the U.S. dollar caused in part by greater dependence on foreign oil.
