Jimmy Carter

Presidency

Who was his vice president?

Walter Mondale served as Carter’s vice president. Mondale had been a U.S. senator from Minnesota since 1964. Mondale also had been the attorney general for his home state before a twelve-year-career in the Senate. Mondale would be Carter’s running mate in their failed 1980 reelection campaign. Mondale later captured the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984, but lost badly to popular Republican incumbent Ronald Reagan.
