Tyler wholeheartedly supported the annexation of Texas, something that Whig candidate Henry Clay opposed. Tyler was able to obtain a promise from the eventual Democratic party candidate (and ultimately his successor) James K. Polk that if Tyler dropped out of the race, Polk would support the annexation of Texas.
