Grundy’s connections helped Polk land a job as a clerk in the state Senate in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Polk learned and loved the legislative process from this up-close vantage point. Polk later returned the favor when he was governor, appointing Grundy as a U.S. senator to replace the Whig Hugh Lawson White.
