What powerful position did Fillmore hold in Congress?

Fillmore served as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee from 1841 to 1843. The head of this committee has a great deal of power with respect to tax and tariff measures that are introduced in Congress. From this position, Fillmore helped lead the Tariff of 1842 to passage.
