Fillmore became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1833 as a member of the Whig Party and served in the Twentieth-third Congress from 1833 to 1835. He returned to Congress for three more successive terms from 1836 to 1842. By this time, he had moved from the Anti-Mason to the Whig Party.
