What prestigious political position offered by President Polk did Pierce decline?

Polk offered Pierce the position of U.S. attorney general when his previous attorney general, Nathan Clifford (a future U.S. Supreme Court Justice) became U.S. envoy to Mexico. Pierce declined the position and instead offered himself for service in the Mexican–American War.
