What was Pierce’s military experience?

Pierce volunteered in Concord, New Hampshire. His political connections led to his commission as a colonel and later a promotion to brigadier general. He followed in his father’s footsteps by leading men into battle. Ironically, he served under General Winfield Scott—his future presidential opponent.
