Truman joined the Missouri National Guard in 1905, leaving after six years. When the country entered World War I, Truman reenlisted in the National Guard. His unit became a regular army force. He served in the One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Field Artillery and saw combat action in Europe at the Vognes Mountains near the France-Germany border. He left the war as a major.
