Daniel Webster served as Fillmore’s secretary of state, just as he had for former Whig presidents William Henry Harrison and John Tyler. The influential Webster was a lead ing United States senator earlier in his career and one of the finest lawyers ever to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court.
