Who was Van Buren’s vice president?

Van Buren’s vice president was Richard Minter Johnson, a former war hero during the War of 1812 and a former U.S. senator from Kentucky. Johnson had an open interracial relationship with one of his former slaves whom he actually regarded as his common law wife. Opposition to Johnson was strong enough that he did not get a sufficient number of electoral votes while running with Van Buren. The Senate had to elect Johnson as vice president.
