Jimmy Carter

Presidency

Whom did Carter defeat in the general presidential election?

Carter defeated Alabama governor George Wallace, California governor Jerry Brown, and U.S. senator Harold Jackson from Washington. Carter successfully ran as the political outsider and captured the nomination.

Carter defeated incumbent Republican Gerald Ford in a very close election. Carter seized upon the fact that Ford had pardoned former President Richard Nixon; he also emphasized the fact that he was a Washington outsider who could change the political system for the better.
