William Howard Taft

Presidency

Whom did Taft defeat to win the Republican nomination?

President Roosevelt had announced that he would not seek a third term. Taft for his part was more interested in one day becoming Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, but his wife, Nellie, pushed him to run for president. Roosevelt called him to the White House and told Taft that he was his handpicked successor. Roosevelt helped ensure that Taft had smooth sailing at the 1908 Republican nominating convention.
