Taft defeated familiar Democratic presidential aspirant William Jennings Bryan. Taft had the advantage of being the successor to the popular Theodore Roosevelt. Bryan said that Roosevelt had actually taken many Democratic positions during his administration, but that argument did not work with the majority of the voting public. Taft won the electoral vote by 321 to 162.
