Whom did he defeat to win the Republican nomination in 1920?

Harding is considered by some historians as a dark horse candidate. He was not expected to win the nomination. The favorites were Leonard Wood; Frank Lowden, the governor of Illinois; and Hiram Johnson, a U.S. senator from California. Harding emerged as a compromise candidate and captured the nomination.
