Roosevelt left this position in 1920 because he was the Democratic vice presidential candidate alongside presidential candidate James M. Cox. Roosevelt campaigned hard for Cox and himself, but they lost the election to the Republican ticket of Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge.
